Rob McClendon: So how do today’s instructors keep students engaged? Well, our next guest has some definite ideas. Andy Masters is an expert on generational differences in education and in the workplace. And I visited with him on stage after he spoke to CareerTech educators.

Rob McClendon: Andy, how dramatically are the demands on our education system, how dramatically are they changing?

Andy Masters: Well, it’s incredible versus education of even 10, 20 certainly 40 years ago. You think about it, at first an incredibly more diverse population and also the technology standards that have to increase. We’re talking in the classroom, not to mention the competition inside and outside of the United States. So people can actually get their education online and so forth, so it’s just amazing the differences, and hopefully we can find a way to keep up with it.

Rob: So we have these students that have more choices but also more demands. How do you motivate them?

Masters: Well, I think one of the biggest things is, I’m a big believer in role models – let’s just face it. And so, we have to find success stories for students that, “Hey, someone in your seat two years ago, three years ago, five years ago, they have, they’re doing something now that they love and are making a great living doing it, and you can do that too.” Because there’s so many more opportunities than there were just 10, 20, 40 years ago, and these students need to grasp that and understand the amazing things that are available to them.

Rob: Now, we often hear that, will this generation, they’re X, what do you have to say about that?

Masters: You know, I think that every generation’s had their critics, and unfortunately there are some actual animosity towards today’s generation of students. All they do is text all time, and they have a poor work ethic that a lot people think they have and so forth. But, you know, I really believe, I joke that even the baby boomers, they had a lot of critics as well, and they turned out to be pretty, pretty good. So I think this can be the greatest generation of our country’s history, and we have to show our teachers and our administrators that you can provide the fuel for these guys to take us to the next level of the amazing things they can have in technology and their bright ideas and so forth. And this could be a wonderful generation, and I think, I hope everybody can get behind them.
