ROB MCCLENDON:  WELL YOUNGER STUDENTS ARE ALSO TESTING THE LIMITS OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE AND THEY’RE DOING IT WITH LEGOS.  IT’S DESIGNED TO GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, AND WE WHERE THERE TO SEE HOW THINGS STACKED UP.

WELL IT MAY BE A GAME, BUT IT’S CERTAINLY NOT CHILD’S PLAY.

FEMALE VOICE:  IT’S NOT GONNA MAKE IT.

ROB:  AT LEAST FOR THE CHILDREN IN THE FIRST LEGO LEAGUE.

RIDAH SHAIK:  IT’S A REALLY GOOD EXPERIENCE AND REALLY FUN.  MY GRADES REALLY IMPROVED FROM DOING LEGOS.

ROB:  RIDAH SHAIK IS A MEMBER OF THE DROIDS, JUST ONE OF SEVERAL TEAMS MADE UP OF FOURTH THROUGH SIXTH GRADERS HERE TO COMPETE ON A SATURDAY, BUILDING ROBOTS OUT OF LEGOS.

RIDAH:  I LIKE SCIENCE AND COOL STUFF.

ROB:  SO WHEN RIDAH’S DAD BEGAN TEACHING HER PROGRAMMING IN THIRD GRADE, YOU COULD SAY, SHE TOOK RIGHT TO IT.

RAMIER SHAIK:  AS TEACHERS, AS PARENTS, AS COMMUNITY MEMBERS, WE ARE DEFINATELY OUT PROGRAMMED BY THESE KIDS; AND, THEY PUT US TO SHAME AS IT COMES TO THE ACTUAL PROGRAMMING, STRUCTURING, AND SOLVING PROBLEMS.

ROB:  RAMIER SHAIK IS RIDAH’S FATHER AND COACH OF HER FIRST LEGO TEAM.

[NATS]

RAMIER:  THEY’RE GOING TO BE SUPPORTING 10 BILLION PEOPLE IN THEIR LIFETIME; TO DO THAT, THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO ENGINEER BETTER SOLUTIONS, AND TO ENGINEER BETTER SOLUTIONS, A COMPETITION AT FIRST LEGO LEAGUE.  WHAT I’VE NOTICED IS IT GIVES THEM A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR WORLD, AND HOW TECHNOLOGY IMPACTS THEIR WORLD, AND IT INCREASES THEIR ATTENTION SPAN.

[NATS]

ROB:  SO EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY BE USING A CHILD’S TOY TO BUILD THEIR ROBOTS, THIS COMPETITION TACKLES REAL WORLD PROBLEMS.

RIDAH:  THIS YEAR IT’S ABOUT FOOD, LAST YEAR IT WAS ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND NEXT YEAR IT’S GONNA BE SENIOR SOLUTIONS, IT’S GONNA BE ABOUT HELPING THE ELDERLY.

ROB:  BUILDING YOUNG MINDS FOR TOMORROW, ONE LEGO BLOCK AT A TIME.
