ROB MCCLENDON:  WELL CHANGING GEARS A BIT; WHILE ITS ROOTS MAY COME FROM A LITTLE CREAMERY IN BREENUM, TEXAS, A PLANT JUST OUTSIDE BROKEN ARROW, OKLAHOMA, IS THE PROUD PRODUCER OF WHAT THEY CALL THE BEST ICE CREAM IN THE COUNTRY.  OUR COURTENAY DEHOFF TAKES US THERE.

[BLUE BELL COMMERCIAL]  HAVE YOURSELF A BLUE BELL COUNTRY DAY.

COURTENAY DEHOFF:  AND THAT HOMEGROWN TASTE MAY BE A LITTER CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.

[NATS]

HERE IN BROKEN ARROW, OKLAHOMA, BLUE BELL CREAMERY IS IN FULL SWING; PRODUCING THE MOST POPULAR ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD.

MARTY KILGORE:  OUR HOMEMADE HALF GALLON IS THE #1 SELLING ICE CREAM IN THE NATION.  WE SELL MORE HOMEMADE VANILLA THAN OUR NEXT EIGHT BEST SELLERS PUT TOGETHER.  SO EVERY DAY NO MATTER WHAT WE MAKE HOMEMADE VANILLA IN THIS PLANT.

COURTENAY:  BUT THAT HOMEMADE TASTE IS NOT JUST A DROP IN THE BUCKET; PLANT MANAGER MARTY KILGORE.

MARTY:  IT TAKES A LOT TO MAKE THIS OPERATION GO EACH AND EVERY DAY.  SO, USUALLY IT STARTS OFF IN THE PROCESSING AREA, YOU GOTTA START WITH THE FINEST INGREDIENTS.

COURTENAY:  INGREDIENTS ON A MASSIVE SCALE.

MARTY:  WE RECEIVE ALL THE RAW INGREDIENTS AND IT IS PUMPED INTO THE TANKERS AND THEN FROM THERE ALL THOSE TANKERS, OR TANKS, ARE ACTUALLY PIPED RIGHT INTO THIS ONE AREA.  AND THIS IS OUR BLENDER; SO, THIS IS WHERE ALL, EVERYTHING IS BLENDED UP, ABOUT 32,000 GALLONS OF MILK EACH DAY.  WE RECEIVE ABOUT 20,000 GALLON OF CREAM A WEEK AND ABOUT 20,000 GALLON OF CONDENSED OR BUTTERMILK.  THERE’S A LOT OF INGREDIENTS COMING IN, AND THEN WE PROCESS THAT AND WE ACTUALLY PACKAGE IT; SO, WE’RE PACKAGING ABOUT, OVER A 100,000 HALF GALLONS A DAY, ABOUT A 100,000 PINTS.  SO A LOT OF ICE CREAM IS GOING, GOING OUT OF HERE ON A WEEKLY BASIS.

COURTENAY:  EVEN WITH THE SOFTENED ECONOMY DEMAND IS HIGH AND A CHOREOGRAPHED PRECISION IS DAMANDED.

MARTY:  AS YOU CAN SEE IT IS PRETTY FAST PACED; IF THIS MACHINE MESSES UP, IT CAN GET UGLY REALLY QUICK.

COURTENAY:  AND THIS HISTORIC COMPANY IS UNIQUE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE.

MARTY:  IT’S A VERY FAMILY-ORIENTED COMPANY, WE’RE ABOUT TRULY PROMOTING WITHIN; MYSELF IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THAT.

COURTENAY:  KILGORE WASN’T ALWAYS THE GO TO MAN WHEN IT CAME TO ICE CREAM; IN FACT, HE WAS HERE LONG BEFORE THE CREAMERY, BRUSH-HOGGING THE VERY LAND IT SITS ON.

MARTY:  ONE DAY I WAS COMING BY THOUGHT, WELL YOU KNOW WHAT, I’LL STOP AND SEE IF THEY CAN JUST GIVE ME A SUMMER JOB UNTIL I START COLLEGE MAYBE IN THE FALL.  SO, I GRADUATED FROM COWETA ON THURSDAY NIGHT AND CAME TO WORK AT BLUE BELL FRIDAY MORNING.

COURTENAY:  AND THE REST AS THEY SAY IS HISTORY.

MARTY:  IT IS A COOL JOB BECAUSE THERE’S NOT VERY MANY OTHER JOBS YOU HAVE THAT PUTS A SMILE ON PEOPLE’S FACES.

[BLUE BELL COMMERCIAL]  ONE THING’S FOR SURE, YOUR FIRST BITE WON’T BE YOUR LAST.  BLUE BELL, THE BEST ICE CREAM IN THE COUNTRY.
